A Warm Late Winter
Early March has been warm this year. We meet in the garden Wednesday mornings to tend to things.
March 1 was over 60 degrees with the soil temperature in around 58 degrees.
This blog will document the Square Foot Garden. We are using the method developed by Mel Bartholomew and outlined in his book All New Square Foot Gardening: Grow More in Less Space.
Our garden is a 4' x 4' square, delineated into 16 - one foot squares. The original soil placed in the raised bed was what is referred to as "Mel's Mix". It is:
1/3 Peat Moss
1/3 Vermiculite
1/3 Compost
Once the soil is placed, it is supplemented whenever the soil is worked with a trowel full of compost. Peat and vermiculite are not added again.
Today we added a trowel full of compost to each square and turned the compost into the existing soil.
Planting included seeds of:
Peas
Spinach
Arugula
Round Radishes
French Breakfast Radishes
We also placed our vertical frame which is new this year. The frame is constructed from 1/2" plumbing pipe and we will be adding a nylon netting. The frame is held in place with 2 re-bar in the ground and the pipe is fitted over the rebar. It was easy to place, and it was up in under 5 minutes!
Enjoy the week!
